New Grad, No Job: What To Do

It’s a harsh reality today, that many college graduates will finish school without securing a job offer.  Contrary to popular belief, this impacts students of all majors, from Liberal Arts to the Hard Sciences. The following are a few tips on what to do if you find yourself without a job at graduation time. I asked myself ‘what would I do if I were in that situation?’ And here is what I came up with:

1. Find a Part-Time Job

The last thing you want to do is sit at home and wait for opportunities to come to you. Even if you have to work at the local coffee shop for now, get yourself out there working and earning a paycheck. It’s easier to find a job when you already have a job, even if it’s part time. Employers like to see that you’ve been proactive and using your time productively.

Reading is a quick way to become well-informed on a variety of issues. In addition to this, avid readers enjoy a number of other benefits.  Reading can cause you relax after a stressful day at the office, expand your understanding of the world around you, and even help your brain remain healthy and sharp. While you should definitely try to read a wide variety of topics, there are a few in particular that will benefit New Grads. Read below for a partial list:

As a young professional, you should identify a small number of leaders and authors who inspire you and whose success you would like to replicate. Find biographies and motivational books written by or about these individuals. Search for common themes and habits that you can incorporate into your own life. Do not restrict yourself to books. Use twitter, Linkedin, and Facebook to join groups where inspirational people share their personal and professional insights.  One of the best ways to learn how to be successful is to find out where successful people share and join their communities.
